FACE-OFF: American Idol VS The Voice

We Filipinos love singing… It is very evident to our culture and Karaoke slots on every corner of the street proved that.

We’ve been early exposed with Singing Competions, starting from Barangay fiestas until it landed our television sets via Tawag ng Tanghalan along with its sorts.

Americans alike do think the same thing lately. Almost a decade ago, American Idol paved the way for reality singing completion on TV. Instantaneous, the show was a huge hit.

Newcomers singing their hearts out to the whole country, high-profiled judges, a carefully composed soundtrack and a Simon Cowell; what else can you look for? Plus the voting process which means the people will get to choose their Idol; hence it was called American Idol.

Philippines could not care less, revival of singing contests on TV was at mode; producers adding dramas behind the camera and text-crazed Pinoys commanding the champions was a winner for the younger television viewers.

A decade after, singing competitions on TV is still a craze; X-Factor and The Voice came afterwards, other countries getting their own franchises of these Hollywood based singing contests is in!

American Idol or The Voice?

American Idol
We know how AI works and we have witnessed the unfolding of drama in that show, we’ve also seen how judges affect the show despite the fact that the contestants were the show’s main focus. AI is now on it’s 12th season and somehow, the current season has not delivered the same success unlike of its predecessors.

Critics blame this to the current judges’ chemistry. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez left the Idol seat and they were replaced by Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. Catfights between Nicki and Mariah seem to entice the viewers but got tired of it along the way. However the biggest surprise this season was the fact that all girls topped the singing competition, a far cry from the usual alternative male singers who won the recent seasons. Nice changes though for an old format.

Reportedly due to its “not so overwhelming” success, the producers plan to act some reforms next season. Randy Jackson will be gone and new set of celebs will seat as judges.  Pink, JLo and Justin Timberlake are few of the names being considered. Let’s see what will this lead to.

By the way, Idol is getting into their Final Showdown. Candice Glover and Kree Harrison; two fierce contestants are battling for the title and both are pretty good on their craft.
Which of these two lovely ladies will win?

Candice is a belter while Kree is a KC Concepcion look-alike who fits country music. I think Candice deserves the top spot as she sings better than Kree.

Let us see this Thursday morning who will win this season, Manila Time of course! Try switching to StarWorld or ETC for the live feeds.

The Voice
If AI former judges leaving the show seems to disappoint, The Voice’s new set of judges seem to be a big hit. After a few seasons, Ceelo Green and Christina Aguilera left the turning chairs to give way to RnB King Usher and Latin sensation Shakira for a chance to coach the contestants.

I wasn’t able to follow The Voice on its previous seasons unlike American Idol but this season is quite alluring. Basically, Idol’s loss was The Voice’s gain. I was one of the viewers who switched to The Voice after getting tired of watching AI. I have some American friends at work and same thing goes for most of them! I even have a co-worker who was friends with Danielle Bradberry (well, she claimed to be, Hahaha) , the youngest of The Voice contestants so it was like a spice for me coz we get to talk about it at work.

The chemisty between the four judges (Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher) compliment well. Adam and Blake may be fierce with one another but as friendly and honest with each other; unlike Mariah’s and Nicki’s tiring live catfights on TV. Another point for the show was the A-Lister celebs coaching the contestants; it was as if you are watching actual singing lessons on TV and it was sincere and real at the same time. The victories of the contestants will depend on how good their coaches will be so these celebs are somehow held responsible for their own teams.

The Voice is just starting but has gained worldwide recognition like that of Idol’s. Fair enough to say that viewers have something to look forward to.

Of course, Philippines will not leave itself behind. After the mild hit X-Factor Philippines, coming June, we will have our own version of The Voice. Broadway Superstar Lea Salonga, Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo, Rock Icon Bamboo and Black Eyed Peas member Apl.d.Ap will seat on the turning chairs as coaches.  Negative reactions arise from disappointed netizens attacking the production’s lack of a grand stage and even the chairs are being ridiculed. Lea Salonga getting tired of these comments said her piece and pleaded to just stop and watch the show before commenting.  After all, it is The Voice people, not The Chair!

Going back to the show, it is currently on its Playoffs (like NBA huh!) and the current episode will finally come out with a list of their Top 12! So check AXN from time to time for the latest episodes of The Voice!

Michael Buble’s To Be Loved Album Review

I got hold of Michael Buble’s recent record and instantly enjoyed Michael’s take on classic hits spanning musical decades.

Of course, expect the Big band attack of Pop hits and surprisingly Buble proved that his music does not just appeal to older markets but his version of “It’s A Beautiful Day” and “Close Your Eyes” can certainly be enjoyed by the younger mass that commands the music industry nowadays.

Familiar classics like “To Love Somebody” and “Something Stupid” were retained to their usual arrangements but still as likeable as the original.

“It’s A Beautiful Day”, the CD’s carrier single was fun to listen to and “You’ve Got A Friend in Me” will remind you of your childhood memories.

“Young at Heart” and “Nevertheless (I’m in Love with You)” are direct rip offs of 60’s hit, it sounded as if you were back when your Grandma plays Franks Sinatra or Engelbert Humperdinck; a nice change for a hearer’s ears.

Contemporary track “Who’s Loving You” gives its listeners the 70-ish vibe while “Come Dance With Me” was actually a nice alternative for your usual Sunday morning hits!

My personal favourite was Michael’s version of Rod Stewart’s “Have I Told You Lately”; he gave a new sound to this listener’s classic and tagged the uniquely expected Buble’ sound!

Over-all To Be Loved is a nice substitute for your conventional Pop sound that will definitely give joy to both young and old listeners’ ears.

Luckily, this album gave what’s expected from it; BBB!

Big Buble Band sound!

To Be Loved is available on ITunes and Amazon!

Top 10 Celebs Who Will Rule The Coming Years!

Stars do come and go.

Entertainment is an industry where people make money out of amusing their viewers with their talent or skills. It might be out of a funny instance or out of the celebrity’s one-of a kind ability.

Many have dreamed but very few were lucky enough to achieve what they have dreamed of. This post list out the celebrities who I think will rule the entertainment world in the coming years.

I made a short-list of upcoming stars, mostly teen stars who have barely been in the business, or who have just getting fair recognition recently.

Here it goes! First of my Top 10 series, My Top 10 upcoming stars that will most likely rule our picture tubes or will lead the box-office lines next year!

Runner-ups!
Elmo Magalona, Martin del Rosario, Bea Binene, Khalil Ramos, Barbie Forteza, Paulo Avelino, Jerome Ponce, Janella Salvador, Eula Caballero, Meg Imperial, Yam Concepcion

These stars have been barely in the business and have gained quite good amount of followings and appreciation. Given the right treatment and project, these celebs would surely go places. We have seen them act, some sing and danced but their names, safe enough to say, became part of our households recently because of the series and gigs they have appeared to. Needless to say, these network stars can make it bigtime if the machineries and exposures are treated with high regards.

However nothing is permanent, thousands of teenager hopefuls fall in lines and wait for their chance of stardom, how long can they stay strong to keep their careers going? Only time can tell.

10. Angeline Quinto

A singing contest champion, Angeline has proven that she can stay long on this business. Right after the Sharon Coneta hosted singing contest Star Power, hopes are up for Angeline. She landed a hit debut album and a movie with ABS-CBN’s flavor of the month Coco Martin. Though the box-office result of her first movie venture did not turn out as expected, ABS-CBN still gave her a lead role on a primetime romantic comedy series “Kahit Konting Pagtingin” with no less than Paulo Avelino and Sam Milby. This proved enough that the Kapamilya Network is optimistic that they can do the same magic they did with Sarah Geronimo.

Given the right approach and a better packaging, I believe that Angeline can show her detractors that she is not just a singing champ who passes by.

9. Julie Anne San Jose

A former Popstar Kids finalist, Julie Anne has grown up to be a proud young musician. She sings well, she plays instruments and composes her own songs. Her multi-platinum debut CD was a success along with the awards and recognitions on her belt. Aside from that, her online fans are a force to reckon with. Her movie with Elmo Magalona though was a disappointment, showed the trust Kapuso Network has bestowed on her.

Her new look shows a more mature and aggressive Julie Anne, far from the sweet and promising hopeful we’ve seen on SOP days. I believe that she will be more successful if she ventured herself more on her music than being an actress. Her team should focus on cementing her status as a record-selling singer and hopefully everything else will follow.

8. Julia Barretto

A stunning young beauty with a promising career ahead of her; that is what everyone says whenever Julia’s name is dragged to convos. Being a Barretto indeed has its perks despite the controversies they are facing right now. Reportedly, she will lead her own teleserye soon; a far cry from the usual supporting roles or second wheels that newbies get commonly.

Julia exudes a Gretchen Barretto-appeal while her Claudine Barretto-like acting prowess has yet to be seen. How will Julia fare on the boob tube? Let’s wait and see!

7. Jessie Mendiola

After being seen on commercials, Star Magic tapped and groomed her to be one of its prime artists. She starred “Gimik 2010”, a mellow hit remake of the teen-oriented show “Gimik” showed almost a decade ago. Within a year, she led her own titled-role series “Sabel” which is a mild hit and starred on movies in between.  Her series “Paraiso” was a qualified success and apparently a “Maria Mercedez” remake is on the way.

Can the Kapamilya Network make a better version of Kristine Hermosa out of Jessie? We’ll have to wait and see!

6. Richard Yap

Richard Yap, the ultimate dream guy of our yayas and moms alike! After being Papa Chen on the Kim Chiu series “My Binondo Girl”, he is now Sir Chief to everyone! After starring in the daytime mega hit “Be Careful with my Heart”, life was a 360 for Richard; endorsements fell in line and a movie is on the way. What more can a 40 year old businessman turned actor can wish for.?

Truly an unconventional tale of fame, Richard has proven that age does not matter on the business of entertainment!  We will see a lot of Sir Chief more this coming months as his network preps up big projects for him.

5. Alden Richards

A good looking face matched with a precise talent for acting, Alden is Kapuso’s biggest shot for stardom. If they made Angel, Marian and Richard the stars they are now, they can surely make it with Alden this time. His hit series with Louise Delos Reyes “One True Love” enticed the fans with his matinee idol charms while his performance on the horror movie “The Road” gave us a glimpse of his talent as an actor. With teleseryes on his belt and right movies on the way, Alden is definitely one of the upcoming stars to watch out for.

4. Enrique Gil and Xian Lim

Both Enrique and Xian have been there for quite some time but weren’t getting attention until 2012.
Enrique starred on the hit Kathryn Bernardo led series “Princess and I” sharing billing with Daniel Padilla and Khalil Ramos. Aside from the TV series, he starred on movies “The Reunion” and “Way Back Home”. Enrique proved that he has the X-factor and ABS-CBN is not numb to not notice that; big projects are lined for this young star. A star-studded teleserye with Julia Montes is on the works and movies on the follow.

Xian Lim was one of the hopefuls before, I remember him on the Kim-Gerald’s weekly drama series “My Only Hope”. He has the leading man built and a very Pinoy look but it was not enough to get the bigwigs’ attention, it was until “My Binondo Girl” which proved that his chemistry with Kim Chiu was not behind of Gerald Anderson’s. The series paved way for big endorsements and another big series “Ina, Kapatid, Anak” which currently hooks viewers all around the world. A KimXi movie is the only thing that is lacking however a report says that this is bound to happen anytime this year.

3. Kathryn Bernardo

After the Mara Clara remake which she shared along Julia Montes, Kathryn Bernardo became a household name. Kathryn is the new teen queen of this generation, her team up with Daniel is exciting and her acting ability is promising.

A Goin’ Bulilit veteran, this child star has grown to be a gifted actress. Her role on Mara Clara paved the idea of her being a top drama actress and her series “Princess and I” flagged her teen queen status.
Her network is grooming her to be the next big thing; it is not far from impossible since she emanates Filipina beauty along with exceptional acting talent. Big projects are on the way and with right attitude and career move, this lass will go places.

2. Daniel Padilla

“Nasa kanya na nga ang lahat” is what everybody said after his successful Big Dome debut. His first major concert proved detractors that he has the charm and talent to fill up the country’s biggest coliseum. It did not take too long for Daniel to achieve the “hottest teen sensation” status, he owes it to the Kapamilya hit series “Princess and I” and multi-platinum albums from Star Records. Her team-up with Kathryn Bernardo is the hottest right now and his song “Nasa’yo Na Ang Lahat” tops the airwaves. The KAthNiel movie was a mild hit also, proving the buying powers of their fans. His success is impressive despite the common feminism on Filipino fans but what made him special is the fact that the boy can sing and that sets him apart from all of his contemporaries.

Endorsements, TV series and a movie are all in the way; ABS-CBN indeed has another multi-media gem to polish, it is up to Daniel on how to maintain his newfound stardom.

1. Julia Montes

Like Kathryn, Julia is on her way to superstardom but what sets her apart from Kath is the network’s treatment in favour of Julia. Unlike Kathryn, Julia can tackle more mature roles and seemingly, the network is grooming her to be the next Claudine Barretto or Bea Alonzo, big dramatic actresses of their time.

Julia’s team up with Coco Martin was a huge success and “Walang Hanggan” was definitely phenomenal. Her movie was a mild hit but the network doesn’t seem to care. They have a lot in toll for this young actress.

She will be doing a TV drama series with Enrique Gil among other big stars and rumors say that she is slated to play a major role that every female celebs on her network is wishing for, well let’s see how will this lead into. Julia is definitely the one to watch out for!

There you go! My Top 10 Celebs who will most likely rule the entertainment world! Watch out for the next posts on my Top 10 series!

HIATUS... for now

Hiatus
          (h-ts)
