It Takes a Man and a Woman Movie Review

Making a good sequel of a good film is unusual but making a better follow up of a good romantic-comedy series was never heard of; in the landscape of Philippine Cinema.

Well folks, that was true until the film I watched a while ago.

We were in the mall past 12; had lunch and proceeded to the cinema. The crowd was overwhelming considering it was Black Saturday. Couples, families, barkadas and even loners took time to catch a glimpse of “It Takes a Man and a Woman” in its first day of release despite the fact that Hollywood films like “The Croods”, “The Host” and “GI Joe: Retaliation” are in competition. I can remember the same scenario during the run of “Sisterakas”; bunch of people in line waiting expectantly for their turns. I bet tomorrow (Easter Sunday) would be more crowded than what have been today; if the same response continues, I’d say this film’s total box-office turn out could be around 200-300 million; another goldmine for Star Cinema and Viva Films.

Rated “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board, expectations are high to the third instalment of the Laida Magtalas and Miggy Montenegro love story. They have been filming it for almost two years now; unavailability of the stars was the main reason of the delay but it turned out to be a blessing as they had more time to enhance the story and the script. Kudos to screenwriter Carmi Raymundo (a twitter friend of mine, ehem.. ehem..) for a well-made, clever and engaging work.

The central point of the film is to give justice and conclusion to the lead characters’ love affair. I’ll do my best not to give any spoilers for the benefit of those who haven’t watched the movie yet.

For almost 4 years, Miggy and Laida grew apart due to some unfortunate circumstances in their individual lives. Miggy’s life started to mess up while Laida has to face her own family struggles. This is where the story’s conflict started to transpire. The way the story unfolds was good. It did not present the whole story in a chronological manner; the flashbacks and the characters’ recollections add an element of surprise to the movie. I just felt that Laida’s life in New York wasn’t completely told and Miggy’s relationship with Belle (played by Isabel Daza) wasn’t properly set; additional few scenes could have been added to show that for almost 3 years, he had good memories at least with his current girlfriend.

Despite of very small discrepancies in the story, the whole film was a picture of outstanding visuals; the color and graphic was sharp and rich, the New York scenes were surprisingly good as it turned out to be flawless and the extras acted pretty convincing. I thought first that the New York scenes would just be an added-value just to say that the producers spent more bucks for the movie but the significance of those scenes were incorporated well in the story, and it really shows in the film. The production design was great and the musical score and sound was better and clearer compared to other Star Cinema movies. On the other hand, there were some few editing mishaps but are forgivable enough not to ruin the mood of the film.

I totally enjoyed Sarah Geronimo’s Laida Version 2.0; it was basically the highlight of the movie. Cathy Garcia-Molina did a great job in giving directions to Geronimo’s character as Sarah has a tendency to overlook some details and blend her personality to the character she portrays. This was quite evident on some of her movies. Nevertheless, Sarah did a remarkable job with the portrayal and the way she carried herself in the movie; her performance as a young Editorial Consultant based in New York really showed on the film. Her flirtatious acts sell well to the viewers; the way she delivers her English lines with resonance in an effortless manner is a great deal and enough evidence that there is no other female actress who can play the character better than her. Can you imagine Maja Salvador or even Marian Rivera throwing those lines? I bet, no!

She looked very pretty and stunning in the whole film; you’ll see what I mean once you’ve watched the movie. The part where she looked best was during the wedding scene; I’ve heard gasps from the people behind me and realized that she’ll make a very beautiful bride someday.

Her dramatic scenes were handled carefully; Sarah has the natural talent to make others cry and laugh at the same time, one asset of a true rom-com queen.

John Lloyd Cruz’s portrayal of Miggy Montenegro as expected was splendid. His performance in the film is a sufficient confirmation of his versatility in his craft. An actor in the truest sense, he delivered a heartfelt piece without overdoing it. His scenes weeping for forgiveness was almost real and his nuisance to Laida Magtalas Version 2.0 is very entertaining. Once John Lloyd sheds a tear, everyone in the movie house follow. Swak sa timpla kumbaga.

Kilig and sweet moments are all over the film, the most surprising was the last part; Sarah G. in lingerie for their honeymoon, what a scene?! Bentang-benta talaga.

John Lloyd and Sarah’s chemistry exudes throughout the movie; there is no much effort yet people and fans love to see them both together.

The supporting casts did well also; Matet de Leon, Joross Gamboa and Gio Alvarez were the additional spice in the film; the movie is not that fun without them while Isabel Daza delivered pretty well on her first acting venture; she fit the socialite “third wheel” role and manifested the awkwardness that is being asked between the love triangle in the film.

Excellent script, decent story, good directing and pleasant acting; “It Takes a Man and a Woman” has brought us to a “no better” conclusion of a typical rom-com money cow that Filipinos loved.

The film in whole was very entertaining as the story flow and dialogue is appealing and witty. Fans can definitely enjoy it while non-fans might hate it at first but eventually will love it as it has the makings of a great Pinoy rom-com classic.

P!nk: The Truth About Love Album Review

After 2 years, pop-rock singer P!nk (Alecia Beth Moore) is back with her new studio album “The Truth About Love”.I just got hold of the album few days ago.

I’d be so bias in this review as I consider myself a P!nk fan ever since “Just Like a Pill”. For me, she is one of the best vocalists in the music scene ever. The pitch, range and dynamics of Pink’s vocal prowess do really show on her new album; actually on some tracks in the album, her voice does sound like Kelly Clarkson’s, another great vocalist. And take note, when she does her songs live, it should good for sure.

Her former record gave Pink a different sound as she tried to get along with the Pop trend, not that I did not liked it but it delights me more that on her current CD, the good-old powerhouse P!nk sound is so back.

Composed mostly of hip-rock-alternative tracks, Pink entices her fans with nicely-written ballads and trendy pop-rock musical tracks.

The carrier single “Try” was a nice mix of pop-alternative-rock and a little blues; melody’s nice and the lyrics is fine.

What I love most of all the songs in the album was “Just Give Me a Reason”, a pop-alternative track featuring FUN’s frontman Nate Ruess, their voices complimented really well, it has a goosebump feel when you listened to it.

Tracks like “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” is an easy favourite; “True Love” and “Slut Like You” gives a Pop sense to its listeners.

“How Come You’re Not Here” is a hard rock track that brings the rocker out of P!nk while the melody of “Truth About Love” has a feel-good vibe yet, bitterness on love is all over the lyrics.

“Beam Me Up” and “The Great Escape” are laidback alternative-ballads that hopeless romantics can definitely enjoy.

What surprises me the most was the last track in the album “Good Old Days”, – a country-sounded song sung by a rocker; they were able to pull it off despite of the ukulele getting along with an electric guitar in the background. The lyrics depict Pink while reminiscing her good old days, when she was younger and lives are much simpler.

Over-all, the album is excellent in terms of variety and surprises; all of the songs are worth your ears, it sounded pleasing that even non-fans can definitely enjoy it, if not all, most of it.

Definitely worthy of your hard-earned pennies, and no auto-tuned vocals at all!

Grammy material? I hope so!

Way to go P!nk!

Does Jessica Sanchez's "Tonight" promises a lot?

Does Jessica Sanchez's debut single "Tonight" promises a lot?

I asked that question after hearing and watching the music video from YouTube.

Can her debut single bring her to the success that all her fans are praying for? Will it be enough to put Jessica on top of the music scene?

Being a Filipino myself, I am proud of Jessica's talent and vocal prowess; however, like Charice, Jessica is starting a career of herself in the wings of safe-playing musical producers who doesn't seem to know how talented this girl is.

Honestly speaking, "Tonight" (video below) does not bring up anything new out of the fresh and charming Jessica Sanchez. Like Charice, the producers decided to tap another talented artist to have a duet with them to gain some attention.

I felt that it would have been better if they'll release a single where Jessica can truly show her singing style and vocal range. The producers should take risk of Jessica's talent, and make a worthy album that fans will love. Critics on the other hand have always something to say but the record producers should make an effort to at least please them, especially now that Jessica is starting what else could be the best way to start things? A Grammy nod maybe?! Not bad for someone as talented as Jessica right?!

I'm hoping though that once her debut album is out, it will include some well-written standards and ballads, which I think suits better on Jessica's singing style. With the range and dynamics this girl has,  she'll be unique and different from her contemporaries in the music scene.

By the way, "Tonight" featuring Ne-Yo is available in iTunes and her full-length record "Me, You and the Music" will be released on April 30, 2013 under Interscope Records.

How's that for a thought?!

Movies for Reflection this Lent Season

Want to reflect while enjoying a worthy movie?

Try spending the holy week in a movie marathon with your friends and loved-ones.

I listed down five good movies that may touch your heart

5.) The Last Song (2010)
It is a romantic coming of age movie starring Miley Cyrus. A rebellious daughter spends the summer with his estranged father.  How will they reconnect with each other despite of their differences? The movie tackles love, family and most of all forgiveness. It was based from Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same title; Sparks also co-wrote the screenplay.

4.) August Rush (2007)
Deciding to run away to New York City, musical prodigy Evan Taylor begins to unravel the mystery of who he is. All the while Evan Taylor's mother is searching for him whilst his father is searching for her. A melo-drama hinting few social problems involving children like child-labor and abortion.

3.) The Lovely Bones (2009)
A critically-acclaimed supernatural drama film of a young ghost trying to get in touch with her loved-ones to track her killer; it is based from a 2002 novel by Alice Sebold. Director Peter Jackson’s imagery gave intensity to the film; the lead actress (Saoirse Roman) gave a great performance alongside the other cast. It is not a usual ghost story as it presented the theme in a light yet uncanny way.

2.) The Road (2009)
A 2009 film based from the Pulitzer-award winning novel by Cormac McCarthy; it’s a story of a man and his young son struggling for survival in a post-apocalyptic setting. The film involves a series of flashbacks which would help set the story of the movie. The cinematography is excellent and the story is compelling.

1.)    Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
A biographical drama starring Will Smith and his son Jaden. The film gives us a glimpse of the hardships and trials of a homeless doing his best to give his son a decent life. Smith got an Oscar nod for his performance in this movie. The film’s honest storytelling and well-crafted screenplay makes it one of a kind.

There you go! Go try these movies ok?!

Have a peaceful Holy Week!

MOVIEnticipation of the Week: It Takes a Man and A Woman

Movie fans are thrilled for the release of “It Takes a Man and a Woman”, the third instalment of Star Cinema and Viva Film’s well-loved romantic-comedy franchise.

After four years, Laida Magtalas and Miggy Montenegro separated ways. The story will start with Laida leaving for the States to pursue a better career and Miggy grieving for his father’s death. One has to pursue her dreams while the other one found comfort in the arms of someone else.

The first two films were Graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board and both are blockbusters earning over 400 million pesos in the tills; an evidence that good movies can also sell tickets.

John Lloyd and Sarah’s chemistry emanates in the first two instalments, but can they sustain it this time?

Though Sarah’s capability on tackling more mature roles radiates on the trailer; I’m hoping to see more of her playing roles far from being a rom-com heroine. John Lloyd on the other hand proves that his appeal is not boxed in to a single film genre or loveteam, certainly this film would add feathers to his cap of box-office hits. The film was partly-shot in the wintry New York City, a common Star Cinema recipe to somehow treat the eyes of its viewers.

What will it take for Laida and Miggy to have their happy ending? Find out this Black Saturday, March 30 in theaters near you. You can watch the trailer below!

I did, i hope you too

I felt broken, the time you broke my heart
I tried begging as tears pull down my eyes
I screamed your name, hoping you’ll come back
But no, you never did.

I was hopeless, unsure of all the things
You were ruthless, pleading in my dreams
But dream’s not real, I’m glad I woke up
Coz you aint did, you never did

I stood my ground that I will forget you
I promised myself that I will not think of you
Well I’m so sorry, so lucky for me
I moved on, no longer the cold old me

You said before, I’m not worthy
You said before,  love’s not enough for me
You said before, We’re living in fantasy
I’ll say it this time, I don’t want you anymore

Time went by, so fast I don’t know
I poised myself, insisting for tomorrow
Saying one day, I’ll get by this ache you laid on me
Said I will, and I did

One night, along my doorstep way
A note saying I’m sorry, please come back to me
I thought my heart throbbed but no
Finally, my heart followed what my head is up to.

And now you’re coming back, asking for forgiveness?
I hoped that so badly, that was before
But everything has changed, so sorry babe
I’m glad we ain’t back, and we will never be

Honestly it hurts, it hurts a lot
Seeing you in pain crushes my heart
You were never like that when we were still together
So please let me go, coz we’ll never be together

Thank You Camellia Review

For this blog's premiere post, we decided to review American Idol winner Kris Allen’s sophomore album. Basing to what I listened to, the AI champ's record exudes a lot of promise.

The album showcases Allen’s effortless singing ability together with the nice mix of pop and alternative sound. Entitled Thank You Camellia, the album shares radio friendly tracks that fans can definitely relate to.

The carrier-single “Better with You” was nicely knotted though it sounded different compared to the other tracks. The album includes nice ballads like “Out Alive”, “Blindfolded” and “You Got a Way”.

The acoustic “Teach Me How Love Goes” and “The Vision of Love” can be an easy favorite among listeners too. Pop-ish “Rooftop” can be quite disappointing; but the whole album, though there is no much variety, I’d say is worth your penny.

Try playing it during your siesta time or while drive-tripping, you may find yourself moving along the beat while steering your wheels.

Kris Allen has somewhat proved that he is better than the other American Idol winners by providing his fans a decent sound that most can certainly enjoy.
